Skin Function – The Dermis

The dermis is the skin’s deep, moisture-rich layer—home to the vital fibers that shape its firmness and elasticity. It’s made up of collagen-based collagen fibers, elastin-based elastic fibers, and the nourishing matrix that fills the space between them. These fibers not only form the foundation of supple, resilient skin, but also play a crucial role in expressions and skin flexibility.
All of these components—collagen fibers, elastin fibers, and the matrix—are produced by fibroblasts, specialized cells within the dermis. The key to maintaining plump, youthful skin lies in keeping these fibroblasts active and healthy.
Like the epidermis, the dermis also goes through a renewal cycle—but on a much slower timeline: about once every 5 to 6 years. That means the skincare you’re choosing today may be shaping your skin’s future half a decade from now. Choose wisely—your future glow depends on it.
