How Long Are Cosmetics Good For? Tips for Safe and Fresh Beauty Care

According to Japan’s Pharmaceutical Affairs Law, cosmetics that can maintain their quality for at least three years under normal storage conditions (avoiding high temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight) are not required to have an expiration date listed. This means that as long as the product remains unopened, it should be safe to use for a minimum of three years—unless otherwise indicated.
However, once opened, exposure to air, fingers, and tools can introduce bacteria. For your safety, it’s best to use up opened products as soon as possible. When in doubt, trust your senses: look, touch, and smell to make sure there are no changes in texture, color, or scent before using.
